Policy Brief: President’s Budget Proposal Cuts National Service

On Monday, President Trump released his Administration’s budget proposal for federal fiscal year (FY) 2019 which again calls for eliminating our nation’s bipartisan commitment to national service. The President’s budget proposal would eliminate the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which funds AmeriCorps and other national service programs. However, it is important to remember that Congress ultimately decides what gets funded. The President’s budget proposal is exactly that: a proposal.

Last year, the President’s budget proposal for FY 2018 also called for eliminating CNCS. In response, we worked in coalition with fellow national service organizations to advocate against this elimination. And, thanks to that work and your support and advocacy, both the House and Senate firmly rejected the proposed elimination on a strong bipartisan basis.

We will continue this advocacy in the coming year! Click here to send a message to your Senators and Representative urging them to support national service and reject the President’s budget proposal.

And, as with last year, the President’s budget proposal again calls for steep cuts in other food and agriculture policies that we support. Taken together, these cuts would have a devastating impact on low-income families and programs that support a safe, healthy, and sustainable food system. We will continue our work with coalition partners in the anti-hunger, healthy eating, and sustainable agriculture fields to urge that Congress rejects these misguided proposals.
